Alternative Treatment for Lyme Disease

Causes

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi). Certain ticks may carry these bacteria if they bite mice or deer that are infected with the disease. You can get the disease if an infected tick bites you.

The parts of the United States where the chance of getting Lyme disease is higher include:

• New England

• The mid-Atlantic states

• The north-central states

Note: Deer ticks can be so small that they are almost impossible to see. Unlike a mosquito bite, a tick bite cannot be felt so, many people do not even know that they have been bitten. In most cases, the tick must stay on the body for 48 hours to transmit the bacteria to humans.

Tests & diagnosis

There is a blood test that will check for antibodies to the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. The most common one is called the ELISA for Lyme disease test. A Western blot test is done to confirm ELISA results.

Since the tests are usually not accurate in the first few weeks after the tick bite, it may not come up positive if given early in its progression.

An alternative test would be a skin biopsy which can sometimes identify the Lyme disease bacteria.

Symptoms

Not everyone infected with these bacteria gets ill. If a person does become ill, the first symptoms resemble the flu and include:

• Chills

• Fever

• Headache

• Lethargy

• Muscle pain

There may be a "bulls eye" rash, a flat or slightly raised red spot at the site of the tick bite. Often there is a clear area in the center. It can be larger than 1 - 3 inches wide.

Symptoms in people with the later stages of the disease include:

• Body-wide itching

• Joint inflammation

• Stiff neck

• Unusual or strange behavior

Treatment

Everyone who has been bitten by a tick should be watched closely for at least 30 days. Antibiotics are the usual treatment.
