Autism Spectrum Disorders The Environment and Genetics

by Stephen B. Edelson, MD
(Atlanta, GA.)

In 1992 I began doing clinical research at my center in Atlanta. The theory that I proposed back then was that since Autism was becoming more prevalant every day, there was only one way that could be happening: A toxic environment is also on the increase. If you look at graphs showing the incidence of this chronic illness and a graph showing the yearly increase in the atmospheric toxins you will see similar graphs. In 1992 I set out to study 30 Autistic children to see if I could find the common aberrant biology that was common to the entire group. I found out that 100% of Autistic children were carrying a huge burden of toxic chemicals (pesticides being the most common) and heavy metals (the commonest were Tin, Mercury and Lead). In addition 100% of the group of 30 showed abnormal liver detoxification characteristics. They all had a variety of nutritional deficiencies. A study of free radical excess was found in approximately 50% of these children. We began treating these children to normalize the biology. Over the course of the next 10 years we saw, what only could be described as miracles by mainstream medicine. These children lost the diagnosis of Autism when studied by the same Psychologist that did the testing prior to our therapies. I wrote a book telling about my journey through the convoluted medical characteristics that were present and how all the pathology was reversed. As an aside the mother's that were studied always showed the same toxic overload as their children. This illness begins in the earliest stage of embryonic development. If there is anyone who wants to correspond with me regarding my work please send an e-mail to me at sbe1941@aol.com. Sincerely, Stephen B. Edelson, MD
