Interstitial cystitis, also called painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition characterized by a combination of uncomfortable bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pain in your pelvis, which can range from mild burning or discomfort to severe pain.

Some people affected by interstitial cystitis experience only pain, and some experience only frequent, urgent urination. Most affected people, however, experience both pain and frequent, urgent urination.

These symptoms of are often mistaken for those of a chronic urinary tract infection but a urine culture will turn out to be free of bacteria.

If a person with interstitial cystitis gets a urinary tract infection, symptoms may worsen.

Traditional treatments include using anti inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen. Antidepressants are sometimes used to help relax the bladder with the hope of reducing the pain. Anti histamines might also be used again, to reduce the inflammatory response. Nerve stimulation is a treatment that involves using small electrical pulses to the pelvic area.
